THE HELP

Have you ever been faced with a choice of doing the right thing or looking the other way? Have you ever seen someone being bullied, or something being stolen,  and decided to look the other way rather than get involved? if you have you are taking the easy way out, and its okay because its natural. its natural for  people to want to fit in and not stand out, even if it means not doing the right thing. But the book the help, teaches readers that its better to do the right thing rather than take the easy road out. 


The help takes place in Jackson Mississippi, where African American men and women work for white families as the help. The help are discriminated against and aren't treated as equals, but the whole town doesn't seem to care, until Skeeter Phelan.

Skeeter is a young white woman, who believes that the help shouldn't be treated the way they are. she decides to take a stand and write a book about it. Skeeter could have acted like every other woman around her, which would have been the easy way out, but instead she stuck up0 for what she believed in and wrote the book. The book was a novel told from different African American maids points of view. they all told skeeter their stories and she wrote them down. Skeeter was determined to make a change with her book, even though she was putting herself in danger. The whole town started to ignore skeeter and treat her like an outcast, but she still stuck with her book. Skeeter knew that this was the right thing to do because even if the work was hard and dangerous the outcome of the book would be life changing for the people around her. Skeeter character shows the readers that looking the other way isn't the right thing to do. she teaches the readers that staying true to what you believe in is always the right thing to do no matter the situation.

Skeeter wasn't the only valuable character in the book. Skeeters book wouldn't have been written, if it weren't for Aibleen Clark and Minnie Jackson. Aibleen and Minnie were the two African American maids who were brave enough to help Skeeter with her book and try and change their lives for the better. Minnie Jackson had a hard life because her husband beat her and it was hard for her to find work. She already had so much on her plate, and it definitely would have been easier for her to ignore skeeter like the rest of the town but she didn't. Minnie put everything aside and helped skeeter, because she knew that it would benefit herself and many people around her. Aibileen Clark works for the Leefolt family and takes care of their little girl Mae. Aside from helping skeeter with her book, Aibileen teaches Mae about civil rights and racial equality. If Mae's mother found out that Aibileen was doing this, she would have been in a lot of trouble. Aibileen had a lot of close calls with Mae's mom, but she stuck by her choice to educate Mae. 


These Characters in the help taught readers that when you do the right thing even if its hard, you and other people will benefit from it.
